Bonita L. (Bonnie) Hicken, 72, of Des Plaines, will be remembered as self-giving, compassionate, faith-filled, humorous, energetic, sincere, patient in suffering, and the sparkle in the room. These attributes contributed to her lifelong vocation as a CNA, caretaker extraordinaire and her love of life. She was also a champion to the mistreated and poor in spirit.

Evelyn L. Begalka, 89, of St. Charles graduated from Mt. Saint Mary Academy, where she played volleyball and ran track for her high school. She received her RN degree from Sherman Hospital School of Nursing in Elgin. She worked at Community Hospital in Geneva and for Valley Haven Nursing Home in St. Charles.
Stephanie M. Kabala, 98 of St. Charles, formerly of Chicago, died Sept. 1, 2013. She is survived by her loving son Dan (Lenetta) Kabala, dear daughter in law Joan Kabala, seven grand children, 12 great grand children, and two great great grand children.
Janet Kay Dodson, 70, of St. Charles died unexpectedly at Delnor Hospital Aug. 30, 2013. Following graduation from Geneva High School in 1961, she started working at the State Illinois Youth Center, where she met her future husband, Joe Sr. They made their home in St. Charles. Janet was the “Neighborhood Mom” giving her time to all her family and friends. Janet had the ability to shop for everyone finding the “best deal," and this gave her great joy. She always thought of others before herself and wanted everyone to be happy and get along.
Fredrick "Rick" T Mankowski, 65, of Batavia was a graduate of St. Charles High School class of 1967, an Army veteran in Vietnam, and a hard worker who had a long career working for Eagle Concrete in Batavia, IL. Since his retirement, Rick operated a handyman business. He loved traveling and had a passion for fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He used his many talents to help all those who needed him. He would tackle any job with gusto and can-do attitude. He was a valuable man to have by your side in any instance.

Amelie Mirus, 94, of Batavia, died Aug. 30, 2013 at Geneva Nursing and Rehabilitation in Geneva. She was born Feb. 4, 1919, in France, the daughter of Bernard and Lucille (Besson) Witkowski.
Sally J. Sommers, 54, lived in Sandwich for the past 20 years. She was a fun loving person who has dedicated the last 35 years to the Nicor Gas Company. She loved to laugh and live life to the fullest. She loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends. She was an independent spirit who was never afraid to speak her mind.
John Edmund Wozniak, 83, died peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Tower Hill Healthcare Center in Elgin. John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.Elizabeth Ernzen, 99, of Batavia died Aug. 29, 2013, at her residence in Heritage Wood Retirement Community. She loved her family, Notre Dame and the Cubs.
Frederick Hong, 88, of the Holmstad Retirement Community in Batavia was employed by Rockwell International in Downers Grove in production control for many years before his retirement. He resided most of his life and raised his family in Addison before moving to Itasca for 12 years.
Gary David Strandlund, 54, of Batavia died, Aug. 27, 2013, at Seasons Hospice in Naperville. He is survived by his children, Amber Strandlund, Emund and Bai Kabba and Jessica Jones; his former wife and friend Bridgette Strandlund; his parents, and many other loved ones.
Albert W. Thrun Jr., 77, formerly of Batavia, died unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, IA. He was a “Jack of all trades” and held numerous jobs throughout his life doing lots of different things. He loved working with his hands, he did small-engine work and repair. He was best known for his love of woodworking and jigsaw puzzles. He would put puzzles together and make frames for them.
