A haunted night at the Egyptian

The Egyptian Theatre in downtown DeKalb will host a haunted overnight tour from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. June 29. The tour will be led by the Illinois Ghost Hunters and will take participants to the theater’s darker recesses. The Egyptian is located at 135 N. Second St., DeKalb. We’ve been big fans of the Egyptian since the early 1980s. It’s a wonderful old facility. The June 29 tour promises to be an entertaining event. If you can’t join them that night, be sure to visit the Egyptian at some point. You’ll be glad you did. For more information, call 815-758-1215.

Stan unveils a new website

Stan Oke, owner of Batavia Avenue Mobil in downtown Batavia, recently unveiled his new website, and we think it looks pretty good. One of the features we like is the “Meet the Staff” page. We’re longtime customers of Stan’s, and it’s nice to learn more about the employees who assist us when we visit. (There's a free marketing tip.) We even learned a few things about Stan. In addition to fuel, Stan and his crew offer a range of service and parts for your vehicle. Stan’s shop is located at 27 N. Batavia Ave. For more information, call Stan at 630-879-0999.

Corn and soybean for all

I have a keen interest in agriculture (My father was raised on a farm sparked my interest in farming at a young age.) and enjoy sharing ag-related news with others, so I am excited to tell you the National Agricultural Statistics Service recently reported that Illinois corn and soybean planting caught up to the five-year average despite a late start due to frequent rainfall this past spring. Corn planting was completed in late June and 100 percent of the crop has emerged, according to the NASS. The agency also reported that 96 percent of the state’s soybeans have been planted. The NASS rated 67 percent of the corn crop and 69 percent of the soybeans in good to excellent condition, and that’s good news for the state’s farming economy.
