Purim Service and Carnival

Congregation Etz Chaim of Du Page County, the self-proclaimed "Purim Capital of North America," will hold its traditionally raucous Purim service and carnival on Sunday, March 16th. The service will begin at 10:00 am followed immediately by the carnival, at the synagogue, 1710 S. Highland Ave., Lombard. Adults and children are encouraged to come in costume.

Purim, or the Feast of Lots, is a joyous holiday that recounts the saving of the Jews from a threatened massacre during the Persian period. The story is recounted in the Book of Esther, and the holiday is traditionally celebrated with joy and humor and with the giving of gifts to friends and to the poor.

During the carnival, the synagogue's Junior Youth Group will provides entertaining and challenging games for children of all ages. Wristbands for unlimited game playing are on sale for $12 in advance, or $15 on Sunday. Lunch, including "hamantaschen," the traditional Purim pastries, will be available for $5.
