UPDATED: Sarah Ginter Continues Recovery at Marianjoy

The injured Batavia teen can speak a little and perform some tasks. She still cannot have visitors yet besides family.

A Batavia teen involved in a car crash three weeks ago continues her journey in recovery.

Sarah Ginter has been at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton for the past week. Her mother Della gave the full hospital name Monday on a Facebook page used to provide updates on Ginter.

Ginter, 18, was recently able to tie her shoes and put words together to ask a question. She was also aware when her mother was not in the room and asked her father to call her.

Ginter's mother wrote in a June 3 post that she has started to whisper some words and needed very little stimulation.  for speech, physical movement and more at Delnor Hospital in Geneva before she was transferred to Marianjoy.

Ginter cannot have visitors yet besides family, according to the Facebook page. This is likely being done so that Ginter will not be overstimulated and affect her recovery.

"Please pray that she would be able to eat orally instead of the tube feeding by the end of the week," her mother wrote on Monday. "It seems like she may be processing more now. She is still in a very difficult level and gets fixed on certain words and repeats them—please pray she would be able to communicate better soon."

Multiple posts on the page reference 10 different levels used to mark healing. Ginter was reportedly in a difficult level over the weekend and had trouble sleeping.

"Please pray the meds would help her to calm and focus and sleep and she would not be in this stage long," a June 4 post said. "I'm told this part can get worse before it gets better."

Ginter appears to be dealing with effects associated with brain injuries. She was  after being involved in a May 16 car crash in unincorporated Blackberry Township west of Batavia.

Ginter's friend Lyn Gilbert was driving the car and did not survive the crash. The Ginters have asked the community to continue to pray for Gilbert's family.

The crash has affected many people, including those who don't know the girls directly.

"Baby steps!!" wrote Kerry Latham-Ervin on the Facebook page. "Wtg Sarah, I don't know you but I am a Mom of a child your age and I pray every day for you and your Family! Keep strong! (You're) doing so good!"
