3rd UPDATE: Tornado Warning Over, Severe Thunderstorms Until 1 A.M. Wednesday

The tornado warning is expired, but get ready for strong winds and heavy rain.

Editor's note: Here's a recap of what happened before, during and after the Tuesday storm, as told through our live updates. This article was continuously updated over a two-hour period on June 21.

UPDATE 9:44 p.m.: There are some scattered damage reports across the Tri Cites. Find yours below:

  • Batavia: Some tree branches went down on the west side near H.C. Storm Elementary School, 305 Van Nortwick St. A neighbor says the Batavia Police Department has already stopped by to move them off the street.
  • Geneva: Some power outages on the east side on School, Jefferson, and Dodson streets, as well as Oakwood Drive.
  • St. Charles: There was a live wire reported on Royal Fox Drive in the northeast part of the city at about 9:10 p.m.

UPDATE 9:10 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 1 a.m. for Kane County. Other counties under the watch include DuPage, Kendall and Cook.

A thunderstorm wind gust of 60 mph was reported one mile east of Elgin, according to trained spotter.

UPDATE 9:05 p.m.: Metra's trains going to and from Elburn aren't going anywhere for now, due to the stormy weather.

The following trains are on hold on the Union Pacific West line, according to the Metra website

  • #66 to depart Elburn at 8:25pm and arrive Chicago at 9:46pm
  • #65 to arrive Elburn at 9:06pm
  • #67 to depart Chicago at 8:40pm and arrive Elburn at 10:06pm.

UPDATE 8:57 p.m.: The Tornado Warning will expire at 9 p.m. for Kane County and nearby areas. The line of storms are moving out of the area. Be prepared for lingering winds and heavy rain.

UPDATE 8:50 p.m.:In addition to the tornado warning, northeast Kane County is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 9:15 p.m. The storm is reportedly moving to northern suburbs, including Northbrook, Deerfield and Buffalo Grove.

UPDATE 8:46 p.m.: One of our Facebook followers reported funnel clouds in North Aurora at about 8:20 p.m.

UPDATE 8:39 p.m.: A funnel cloud was reported at 8:05 p.m. at Route 47 and I-88 by a trained spotter. The location was four miles northwest of Sugar Grove.

UPDATE 8:30 p.m.: The National Weather Service describes the storm system "located along a line extending from 5 miles southwest of Gilberts to DuPage Airport to Naperville to Rockdale ... moving northeast at 45 mph."

Storms will be in a line from Lemont to Woodridge to Wheaton at about 8:35  p.m., then to Westmont at 8:40 p.m. and Oak Brook Terrace at about 8:45 p.m.

UPDATE 8:19 p.m.: Metra has stopped trains going to and from Elburn, including at the West Chicago station, according to Metra's website. Metra has stopped the trains because of the threat of high winds. The duration of stopped trains is unknown at this time.

UPDATE 8:14 p.m.: Tornado sirens are being heard in Batavia, Geneva, North Aurora and western DuPage County towns.

UPDATE 8:00 p.m.: A tornado warning now remains in effect for Kane and nearby counties until 9 p.m. 

Dopplar radar identified a system that could produce rain-heavy tornadoes in addition to widespread wind damage.

Go to a basement or small interior room on the lowest floor of your house. Move inside if you are not already and stay away from windows.

The storms will be near the Tri Cities around 8:20 p.m. Specifically Batavia and Geneva first at 8:20 p.m. and St. Charles at about 8:25 p.m.

They are expected to be near Aurora and North Aurora first at 8:15 p.m.

UPDATE 7:35 p.m.: A funnel cloud was reported at 7:05 p.m. near West Chicago by a trained spotter, according to the National Weather Service. The spotter estimated the funnel cloud was five miles north of I-88 on Route 59.

No injuries or damages have been reported at this time.

Heavy storms might make their way through the Tri Cities tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for Kane County and 28 other counties, including DuPage, Kendall, Will and Cook.

Temperatures tonight, June 21, will be in the mid 60s with a 60 percent chance of precipitation. The chance of rain goes down to 50 percent Wednesday, with highs in the lower 70s.
