Batavia's Walgreens Revamp: Learn More About It This Week

Batavia Enterprises will hold information sessions on Feb. 15, 18 and 20 on the proposed downtown Walgreens redevelopment. A formal Public Hearing will be held on Feb. 22 at Batavia City Hall.

If you want to get a better handle on what the downtown Batavia Walgreens could look like in the future, now's your chance.

Batavia Enterprises will hold three information sessions at its office on 140 First St. about the proposed Walgreens redevelopment. All residents are invited to attend any of the sessions.

Here are the information session times and dates:

Date Time Wed., Feb. 15 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sat., Feb. 18 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mon., Feb. 20 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Residents can see drawings and learn more about how the proposed Walgreens project will impact downtown Batavia. Walgreens, which has been in its current location, 138 W. Wilson St., for over 20 years, needs to expand and update its store.

Batavia Enterprises proposes to demolish the building at 122 W. Wilson St. (the former Prairie Path Cycles site) and build a 14,490 sq. ft. Walgreens with a pharmacy drive through. Prairie Path Cycles has already set up shop in another location at 160 W. Wilson St., next to the Batavia Panera Bread.

Please note that these sessions are being held independent of the City of Batavia. Batavia Enterprises and Batavia city staff are in talks about various aspects of the proposal, according to a Feb. 3 memo on the city's website.

The redevelopment was a topic at the city committee level a few times in the past year. The location of parking spots for the proposed site is a recurring concern. Walgreens would like to see parking near the entrance, which would face Wilson Street. Some city committee members noted that the proposed front parking goes against parking design requirements in the City's Comprehensive Plan, and the larger vision of a pedestrian-friendly downtown Batavia envisioned in the Streetscape Plan.

A public hearing is scheduled for next week to consider a conditional use for the proposed drive-through Walgreens. The hearing will be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in the City Council Chambers at Batavia City Hall, 100 N. Island Ave. In the meantime, residents can review the plans at City Hall, on the city's website and also attend one of Batavia Enterprises' information sessions.

"Walgreens has been a vital business in Batavia, and especially in our downtown," said Austin Dempsey, Batavia Enterprises vice president, in a news release. "We’re thrilled that in these tough economic times, Walgreens is choosing to re-invest in our community with an updated and larger store. We want the community to come in and see for themselves the plans we’re proposing to the city. We’re very excited about this project, and want to share our enthusiasm with our neighbors and the Batavia community."
