Batavia Goes on Electric Peak Alert

"Any power you can use at night instead of during the day helps all of us."

The city of Batavia announced Monday morning that the city is on "Peak Alert" from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, July 8.

The city is asking residents to postpone electric usage during those hours due to heat and humidity across the market area. Tuesday's forecast is similar, so Batavia Electric Superintendent Robert Rogde says to expect an alert on Tuesday, as well.

"If you are out in the heat, please be careful and drink fluids.  Please remember to check on your neighbors and relatives. Don’t forget your pets, the heat affects them too," Rogde said in a press release send by email Monday.

Ways to help:

  • Raise your thermostat a couple of degrees if you are running your air conditioning.
  • Cool your house down over night and keep the shades closed during the day. The price of power has been going down at night, so it's OK to use more power at night. "Any power you can use at night instead of during the day helps all of us," Rogde said.
  • Turn off any unused lights and electric appliances. "Think about going out for a picnic at one of Batavia’s great parks. Or try visiting one of Batavia’s fine dining establishments," Rogde said.

Batavia created the Peak Alert Program to conserve electricity, help the environment and control costs.

"We created this program to be good stewards of our resources," Rogde said. "The Batavia Electric System has plenty of capacity and reserve to serve all of our customers."
