Students Vie For Success at Congressional Art Competition

Water Street Studios, in conjunction with Congressman Randy Hultgren's office, will host the Congressional Art Competition this weekend.

this weekend is host to a variety of student artworks.

The Studios, 160 S. Water St., will display and jury art pieces submitted by high school students in the 14th Congressional District on Friday, April 29, Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1.

The piece selected as the winner of this competition will hang in the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. for an entire year. Five professional artists will jury the competition.

“It gives these kids experience and feedback that they typically wouldn’t get,” said Jim Kirkhoff, Water Street Studios board member and artist. This will give the students a prominent venue to display their art.

The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide event sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives. It began in 1982 to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of high school students, according to a press release.

"The Congressional Art Competition provides me the opportunity to showcase the talent of high-school student constituents and acknowledge this region's gifted young artists," said Hultgren in a press release.

Hultgren will attend a reception in May with the students at Water Street Studios, according to Kirkhoff.
