For the summer of 2012, ComEd worked with Leo Burnett to commission local artists to take old refrigerators and morph them into functional pieces of art, all in an effort to promote their Fridge and Freezer Recycle Rewards program. Out of 100 requests for proposals, co-founder and gallery director, Steven Lockwood was chosen to be one of twelve artists to create a refrigerator piece.

Lockwood’s piece, entitled “Regeneration Capsule,” is about passing on green ideas and wishes for the next generations. “By utilizing locally hand made paper embedded with seeds, the public is invited to write their ideas down for the next generation and slide them into the refrigerator creating a ‘time capsule’ for the future that will eventually germinate,” said Lockwood. “Ideas are planted in the piece, and will grow creating a beautiful environment in the interior, while surrounded by a deteriorating cityscape.”

Lockwood’s piece will be unveiled this Thursday, July 12 and will be located at 700 N. Michigan Avenue through August. The public is invited to walk Michigan Avenue together to tour the MetamorFridges and see all the finished pieces beginning 4:30pm at Leo Burnett (35 W. Wacker).
