Artists Wanted for Batavia Mural Design Competition, Deadline July 30

A contest will give a blank building exterior a place in Batavia's arts scene.

The wall of an industrial building near downtown Batavia is a blank canvas for local artists who want to compete to create murals and net $2,000 for their efforts.

The , , and  are sponsoring a project to help beautify Batavia with a competition to find five artists who will each produce an , which would be connected and hung on the west wall of the building at 180 S. Water St.

“The goal of the contest would be to increase public awareness of Batavia’s thriving art culture that is currently emerging and to beautify Water Street,” said Austin Dempsey, vice president at Batavia Enterprises, Inc.   

“This is an exciting project for both the artists and the community,” said Rita Grendze, resident artist at Water Street Studios and 2011 Art In Your Eye poster artist. “Not only will the winning artists gain exposure through having their work permanently on public display, but they will also receive a $2,000 stipend. It's great to see that art and artists are valued and to see Batavia take another step toward becoming a destination city for the visual arts”

The deadline for submissions is July 30. A jury including prominent local artists as well as representatives from the City of Batavia and Batavia Enterprises will review the submissions. The jury will notify selected artists by Aug. 13; they will have until Sept. 20 to complete their murals.

On Sept. 30, the murals will be presented to the public.
