No. 5 Most-Read of 2013: Police Name Driver in Fatal Route 25 Crash

Fourth in a series: A car crash that took the like of a 45-year-old St. Charles man was the No. 5 most-read article by Batavia readers in 2013.

This article actually was the follow-up to the breaking story of a crash on Route 25 south of Batavia.

As I recall, I heard about the crash on the Tri-Com scanner and headed out with my camera. The road was blocked, so I took a long route through a residential subdivision and almost all the way to Aurora to get back to the south side of the crash, then took the circuitous trek back before getting a long-range view of the crash.

Former Batavia Patch Editor Charlie Menchaca did virtually all the reporting after the initial post.

Police Name Driver in Fatal Route 25 Crash

Sadly, the driver who died at the scene was later identified as 45-year-old Karl Smith of St. Charles, according to the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

Smith was driving a sport-utility vehicle on Route 25 along a curve when his vehicle spun out of control, crossing into opposite traffic, and struck a Honda Accord that was traveling south on Route 25. The driver of the Accord, a 60-year-old woman from Batavia, was transported to Delnor Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She was later released from Delnor.
