GARAGE SALE UPDATE: Lots of Goodies This Year

Classy clothes, fine furniture and other home decor can be found during this weekend's City-Wide Garage Sale. The event continues Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Batavia's Annual City-Wide Garage Sale is much more than somewhere to find good bargains. It's also considered by some to be a big party.

Bargain hunters were out in droves today taking in the good weather during the sale, which includes homes from across the entire city. Proceeds from sellers who register for the event benefit the Batavia Fireworks Fund.

Cindy Rojic has been deemed by the people in her life as "The Garage Sale Queen." She has always made the city-wide sale a festive time for her and her friends for the past 17 years.

"My mother calls this the 'social event of the year,'" Rojic said. "We get people from all walks of life telling funny stories and having a great time."

Jack Spears of Chicago came to the sale today with his mother Janis Malone and sister Annelle Mitchell, both of Oswego. They attend the event every year in hopes of finding some great bargains.

"There's been a lot of treasures," Spears said. "Wonderful antiques, some great modern decor and lots of kids clothes."

"And tchotchkes, of course there's lots of tchotchkes," Mitchell added with a laugh.

Megan Cholewa has lived in Batavia for 15 years, but this has been only her second time participating in the event.

"It took me about four years to collect enough stuff to sell," Cholewa said.

Cholewa and company are donating their earnings to the Susan G. Komen 3 Day For The Cure breast cancer awareness walk in August.
