Batavia High School presents the smash Broadway musical, 9 to 5: the MUSICAL, directed by Dominic Cattero.  Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. November 8, 9 and 10. Tickets are available online at the Batavia Fine Arts Center website and at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre box office. Ticket prices start at $10 online and $11 at the box office. The musical is rated PG-13.

The music and lyrics for 9 to 5: the MUSICAL were written by Dolly Parton and debuted on Broadway in 2009. Batavia High School is proud to be the first high school in the state of Illinois to obtain a performance license to bring this Broadway musical to the high school stage.

Based on the 1980 movie “9 to 5” starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, this musical tells the tale
of three female coworkers who concoct a scheme to get even with their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical boss. Violet Newstead (played by junior Kelsey Skomer), is the competent office manager repeatedly passed up for promotions by less qualified males. Doralee Rhodes (portrayed by junior Glynis Gilio), is the attractive assistant to the CEO who constantly rebuffs his unwanted attention.  Judy Bernly (played by junior Cecily Lemon), is the naïve newcomer forced to get a secretarial job after her husband leaves her for his secretary. Franklin Hart, Jr. (brought to life by senior Connor Frederick), is the boss dreaded by them all.

Set in the late 1970s, 9 to 5: the MUSICAL is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge. With a cast of 45 BHS students and 15 new songs all penned by Dolly Parton, 9 to 5: the MUSICAL is sure to become a fan favorite.

The pit orchestra, featuring 27 BHS students
and pianist Mrs. Melinda Rudy, is being directed by Ryan McCann in his directorial debut in the Batavia Fine Arts Centre.

Joining Cattero and McCann on the directorial team are vocal director Christina Virgilio, BHS choral director/teacher; choreographer Tracy Adams; and technical director Mike Baglieri, a 2009 BHS alum.  The Batavia Fine Arts Centre’s state-of-the-art digital sound board, hydraulic pit, computerized lighting system and sophisticated staging equipment is the perfect setting for
the inaugural production of 9 to 5: the MUSICAL on an Illinois high school stage. Don’t miss the adventure of a lifetime as Violet, Doralee and Judy fight for equality and fall into a few predicaments along the way!
