Is December 21, 2012 the End of the World? Scholars, NASA Say No
Find out what the experts are saying about the Dec. 21, 2012, Doomsday prophesies, the end of the Mayan calendar and their potential impact on our area.
Don’t make any rash decisions: Experts say 12/21/12 is going to be just another typical winter solstice.
Killer solar flares aren’t expected. Another planet isn’t on a collision course with ours. And the Mayan “long count calendar” ending on this date has no real significance – they had to end it somewhere!
What is All the Fuss About?
There are a number of theories and predictions that call for earth’s demise on Dec. 21, 2012. They include:
- The ending of the Mayan calendar – The Mayans, according to a Sarasota Patch article, kept three separate calendars. The “long calendar” ends on Dec. 21. Some say this constitutes a Doomsday prediction; many do not.
- Nostradamus – That famed French seer from the 1500s has been credited with predicting several end-of-the-world scenarios that some believe will take place in 2012. The web site December212012.com points to the potential sparking of World War III on this date.
- The collision of Earth and the supposed planet Nibiru – This supposed space catastrophe was initially predicted to strike in 2003. The planet in question was supposedly discovered by the Sumerians, according to NASA. When the world didn’t end in 2003, the date was moved to December 2012 for the deadly collision with earth.
What are the Experts Saying?
The intrigue created by multiple end-of-the-world predictions has made many scholars and even NASA stand up to make statements debunking the claims. From professors at Tampa Bay’s own New College to the scientific minds at NASA, they’re all saying the same thing: Go ahead and pay that mortgage bill and wrap those holiday presents.
In regard to the ending of the Mayan calendar, New College’s Gabrielle Vail says this, according to Sarasota Patch:
There are many misconceptions about the Mayans. If you look at their calendar alone, the Mayans kept three calendars. The one that has prompted the end of the world predictions was their "long count calendar" — a 5,125 year calendar. The calendar began August 11, 3114 B.C. and ends Dec. 21, 2012.
She said the Mayans wrote about dates beyond Dec. 21, 2012 "well, well into the future, trillions of years." They also wrote about dates before the 5,125 year calendar began.
Here’s what NASA has to say about all of the collective Doomsday prophesies:
The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.
What do you think? Is the world ending in a few days or are you making sure those bill payments go out on time? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone." Matthew 24:35-36
That was Jesus speaking to His disciples about the end of days. There is no one who can know when it ill happen. Repent of your sins, place your faith in Christ. Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, believe in your heart that He was raised on the third day. Do these and you will be saved. Not by living a "good life". We are all sinners, none is righteous, not even the priest or pastor. God is a just judge. We must all account for every lie, every hateful thought, every act of sin. Those who place their faith in Christ will not pay the penalty for their sins spending an eternity in hell. Those who have placed their faith in Christ have their sins forgiven and will spend eternity in heaven.

Jesus said his return would be in the lifetimes of his followers:
"Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom." Matthew16:28
"But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God." Luke 9:27
"Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation." Matthew 23:36
"Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled." Matthew 24:34
"Nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven." Matthew 26:64
"Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power." Mark 9:1
"Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done." Mark 13:30
"And ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven." Mark 14:62
"Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled." Luke 21:32

I see by your other comment that you are guilty of "career-ism"--that is, being skeptical of a book "written by shepherds" and cobbled-together oral myths. You probably will be hearing from the International Order of Shepherds who desperately want to improve their image!! Seriously....it is a dogma of Western culture to look askance at oral traditions. Anthropologists have found that some cultures could hand info down accurately "when they wanted to." There is evidence of literacy into the early first/late second millennia BC., so written material is also possible. Besides, Moses was no shepherd but educated in the courts of a world superpower, Egypt. Shepherds? By the first century BC they had the reputation of used-car dealers and politicians--but the New Testament was written by an accountant, a ohysician, a classically trained theologian, the owner of a profitable fishing business (multiple employees), and people of other backgrounds. Don't knock it!

Why do some people believe everything they read? The only thing I “hate” is dangerous dogma and blind, willful ignorance -- which unfortunately is in limitless supply when it comes to religion. You’re gone. And, like generations past, you are trying your best to perpetuate the baseless, science-denying myth-cycle with your kids – just as all the other religious folks are doing with theirs.

Sean....Your idea of"dangerous dogma" or "blind, willful ignorance" may not be mine, or someone else's. There is freedom of speech, thought, and religion--and this is how it should be. Religion is by no means "gone." When people try to replace what they think is dangerous or ignorant religion, they invent something weirder. Take, for example, the Heaven's Gate people--all well educated--who committed mass suicide in order to catch a ride on the tail of a comet several years back......I do not know whether your "science-denying myth cycle" refers to the Mayans or to the young-earth creationists. Maybe both. The Mayan calendar is of historic and ethnic interest, and that is fine by me. We all need connection with our past. As for young-earth creationism......this subject makes many people angry, but that is because they think the Bible is being threatened rather than, perhaps, the latest interpretation of it. Did you know that during the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" trial, the lawyer for the creationist side--William Jennings Bryan--testified under oath that he did NOT believe the Bible meant the universe was created in six literal days. Most evangelicals in the 1920s held to a day-age theory. The young-earth stance became more popular after the beginning of the space race in 1959/60, which is also when Morris' The Genesis Flood was published. Religion will not go away, Sean. People will, and should, always believe in and follow God. But humans debate certain issues into the dust.

Archeologists are finding more and more proof of what is written in the bible. The places, the people, the actions and incidents. They proved that Harod and Pilot were both in Jerusalem around the time Jesus was crucified. What about the Roman Historian who mentions Jesus and his crucifixion and his followers calling them "Christians" and mentions how they were being hunted by the Roman armies to rid the nation of them? And that was 40-50 years after the crucifixion by the way. So even after 40-50 years these witnesses were still sharing what they KNEW. The Christians were willing to die for what they believed not because of a lie, but because they KNEW what they saw. Would you die for something you knew wasn't true? ? One or two might have but not all of them.
Do you believe the story of Troy when there isn't any proof of that ever happening? I do believe Troy existed, but where is the proof of this great city? They "think" they know where Troy was but they haven't found the city per say.
The bible was God breathed and given to us as an instruction book. Read it once and see. It is mostly a manual of how to live and treat others. Start with Proverbs and then Psalms and you will see. It's sad how many people will turn their noses up when you mention the Bible. They may have read one thing they didn't understand and never open it again. Then base their entire belief system on a few passages that they couldn't or didn't want to understand.
Tractriciously
10:01 am on Friday, December 21, 2012
The example of Troy is a great example of my point. We know Troy existed - actually, multiple versions of Troy. And the Greeks and Trojans existed, just as many of the places and people named in the Bible existed. But I no more believe that the Iliad, Odyssey and Aeneid are factual accounts of events related to those gods, peoples and places than I believe in the literal words (translated and re-translated) of the Bible, Koran, Talmud, Bhagavad Gita, or Scientology tracts.

People are incurably religious, or spiritual. The need to find meaning or some sort of guidance in an ancient calendar makes sense, I suppose, in the light of that.
The comments above have veered off the subject of the Mayans to the writings of a culture that knew nothing of the Mayans--and almost none of the remarks, either by skeptics or believers, have been kind or reasonable--although I suppose this is all a matter of definition.

To Mike Bruno---
The list of Gospel quotes that you use above is interesting. But commentators generally interpret those remarks of Jesus' in light of the fact that He did, also, say that "no man knows the day or the hour"--Himself included in this case--of the Second Coming and its related events.. Other eschatological events, such as the Transfiguration (which occurred right after the remarks in Matthew 1`6:28) or the resurrection---or the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple (Matthew 28:39)--may have been foreshadowings or a taste of what was to come, and this is what Jesus meant---or the first and second comings may be considered all "of a piece" in an eschatological program that, obviously, is still ongoing.
If Jesus said He Himself did not know the day or the hour, then it is unlikely that He really meant that things would happen in the life of the generation He spoke to. But Jerusalem DID get clobbered and the Temple destroyed--and He told His followers to flee the region when they saw these things coming to pass--which they did.

Scientists who research and study the DNA of species and plant matter have admitted that DNA is too complex for it possibly to have been formed through chance in a primordial soup mix as Darwin suggested. Anyone who believes this (Darwinism) has not done their own research. They are relying on what Other people want them to believe. I for one do research and seek truth. I weigh the results and decide what to believe.
I do not believe the end of the world is coming on Friday Dec. 21. And even if it is, I will be going home. For Thousands of years in every culture there has been some form of higher deity but in this day and age, people will believe in ghosts, aliens, demons and evil in general and go to mediums to make contact with deceased loved ones and have their future told to them but they can't believe that there is one true God "I am" and Jesus "Yeshua" was his son who came/sent here to save us of our iniquities and win once and for all against Lucifer to take the sting out of death, so through Christ we can be saved and have no fear of death. So no matter what happens you should not fear of death or of anything for that matter. Put your trust in Him, call out to him and ask to be forgiven of your sins.
I could write the entire passage, but obviously anyone reading this could research and find the passage of importance. Luke 21:7-36. This is when the end will come. We are in these times now, but you don't have to be afraid or worried about it.

Then, waiting for Jesus he sat on a hay stack. Some mean boys learned of this and went and lite the hay stack. You have way too much time on your hands.
And, while I may essentially agree with much of what you seem to have to say, I do think that earlier blogger--Mr. Bruno--was correct in suggesting you define yourself by what you hate. Your online moniker casts an unfavorable pall over everything you say about EVERY subject, not just the president of these United States. And calling people idiots or saying they should be institutionalized is rather harsh and unfair. They have certainly "fallen" for a line of malarky, but this only makes them naive. I had a couple women in a Bible study three years ago who were obsessed with this date. I repeated the verse "no man knows the day or the hour,"--etc--over and over. Finally, one of them said, "We may not be able to know the day or the hour, but we can know the year." No, I told her. Some time later I asked all of them WHY they were using Mayan prophecy to interpret Hebrew scriptures. The two civilizations NEVER intermixed. That did it. They finally got the point. I did not accuse them of idiocy, but they were so taken by the idea of the Second Coming that a possible "known date" over-rode their thinking for some time. An elderly woman the other day told me that many elderly people were quite concerned about this Dec 21 date. Are these elderly people "idiots" in your book?
Please try to be more tactful in your method of comment on these things. You are not above anyone else that you should use such language.

Butch.....You run from thought to thought, and your thinking is based on presuppositions that are not mine. You have brought up a lot of issues which take a longer time than I want to take right now. You also seem to hold onto various conspiracy ideas that I do not hold onto. I am not Catholic and I am not LDS and I will not condemn or discuss either. But "predators" are in all sorts of places, not just in pulpits....and not every nun or priest--or even the majority (I am trying to be fair)--is a closet pedophile. Similarly....not every "pagan" or worshipper of another religion is a saint. Chrisitanity has brought literacy, health education, and other good things to many parts of the world....regions that worshipped "pagan solar gods" or some other deity that just told people their situation was a product of something in their past lives---so endure!
And this is not to say that every Christian has behaved wonderfully.
And yes, the LDS church holds a number of books sacred which orthodox (small "o" orthodox) Christianity does not accept. The Muratorian Canon of about 150 A.D. had essentially the current list of canonical New Testament books in it. The Book of Revelation, however, has always been controversial--and its interpretation still is.
But I did answer your original query about the date of the Book of Enoch. Merry Christmas!!

i don't think every priest, Bishop or nun are preadators only the one's who support Tparty candidates like Dolan of NY who was the paymaster who paid 20,000 to each predator priest! Along with the BAIN original investors the ARENA PARTY and murderers of Arch Bishop Romero and the Maryknoll nuns back when Bain was a idea they made it happen, do u think they are on the side of the Angels?
As for a conspiracy agenda it is far worse than that, I don't drink anyone's KOOL AID, TODAY I am curious about the visit of POPE BEN to the ILUMINATI MAFIA jail to personally fire his household servant for LEAKING embarrassing Vatican sworn to secrecy documents and info on a variety of subjects like the assassination of a Pope and the Billions of PETER'S PENCE looted and secured by worthless derivatives that goes back to the CICERO PRIEST and his Swiss as in TWIT and friends like Shelly Adelson and the Red Chinese Triad associates and the SUSPICIOUS suicides on London bridge of other VATICAN BANKER ASSOCIATES, but that's not for this forum i am just reminding VERA we're here, u are must too serious for VERA TO APPRECIATE.

D,O,O,...Better to leave things be here, I think.
Fifteen or sixteen years ago, I was a taxi driver and picked up a man going on a long taxi ride from Elmhurst to the Wheaton courthouse and then Batavia, etc. I asked him what he did for a living, and for literally an hour and a half the man did not shut up. He made crowns for people's teeth and Mother Earth Gaia was this and that and he got a kick of of watching Yuppies with cell phones to their ears getting cancer and you can get signals from space through your teeth and his rotten B of an ex-wife wanted him to --blah blah blah---and the pus in meat and he just LOVED Hershey bars and did you know---?.....you get the idea. On and on and one subject to another and sensible only to him. It's his world, and best to leave it there. Butch's too--although he may be more fluent in person. Not everyone is verbal in print.

Well Bluebird is a upgrade from VERA'S last cohort who closed the thread with his potty mouth ,what do u do in yer present day job bluebird besides editing primitive Latin fragments?
Vera goes to shopping malls wearing her disgusting T shirts anti abortion rallies where disciples of charlatan christian Pat Robertson the crackers Pope and Billionaire, hold hands with the former enemy RC protestors of the beloved the Cardinals George the predator protector and DOLAN the predator paymaster,
I can't forget 2000 one of the reasons for the election result was the RC BISHOPS endorsement of DUBYA along with the Supreme court and then the unholy Bishops and the Pope had second thoughts after the invasion of IRAQ, tough to be the leaders of the oldest Christians on the Planet who are victims of massive bombings(collateral l as Vera said" so what" it is war for Helliburton-blackwater and the entire 1% stooges of the TPARTY,so we engage in ove fests of hate that VERA is the master of and u get the IDEA?
Actually bluebird I could care less on yer opinion of being Articulate, yer good manners and defense of VERA is admirable especially if u are still driving a cab and read a lot of mythology or disinfo on the OT as well as NT.
Vera just hates it when the dot's and t's are connected such as Sheldon and ARENA = drugs-prostitution -money laundering= CAYMANS-SWITZ and TWIT with a DEM rather than moderate GOP in the WH and AG it would not be possible how's that for a conspiracy?
