Reports: Batavia's Portola Packaging Inc. to Lay Off 76 Workers

The WARN report says the layoffs are part of 1,200 jobs set to be cut statewide, according to a Crain's Chicago Business article.

The state of Illlinois puts out an monthly WARN report, an the acronym for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act that requires companies with 100 or more employees to notify affected workers 60 days prior to closures and layoffs.

Crain's says 13 Illinois companies will cut 1,200 jobs in coming months, and the Batavia company is one of those.

According to its website, Portola Packaging is "one of the largest manufacturers of tamper-evident plastic closures and plastic containers for the dairy, juice, and food industries." It manufactures closures, and designs and builds supporting packaging equipment. 

The business has several locations. The address for the Batavia plant is IL951 Douglas Road.

At the same time, Portola Packaging announced a $12 million capital expenditure in its Kingsport, TN, and Tolleson, AZ, facilities. The site does not say if workers would have an opportunity to relocate to those facilities.
