Two local men and a woman face multiple felony counts as a result of a hate crime investigation police began after an attack on two gay men and a woman earlier this month.

Stephan C. Bolt, 31, of the 4N800 block of East Mary Lane, Christopher M. Miner, 30, of the 100 block of North 15^th Street, and Susan V. Patton, 31, of the 6N200 block of Woodland Road, face charges that range from aggravated battery to mob action to hate crime after the attack, which occurred in the 2000 Block of Lincoln Highway early on Jan. 6.

Police were called at 1:45 a.m. that day to a report of a disturbance in the 2000 block of Lincoln Highway (Route 38). Witnesses and the accusers told police they were with a group of friends at a bar authorities earlier identified as the parking lot of Time Out Sports Pub, at 2051 Lincoln Highway.

After the bar closed, police said the accusers were standing in the parking lot waiting for a cab when they were confronted by Patton. She threw a drink into the face of the 26-year-old female accuser, according to police.

The woman and her two male companions walked away to avoid further confrontation, police said.

Instead of waiting for a cab, the trio opted to walk home. As they walked across the parking lot, a gray-colored Mazda pulled up next to the group and stopped, police said. Patton got out of the vehicle and again confronted the 26-year-old woman. Her two male companions stepped between them to protect her, and they were struck by Patton, police said.

Police said that Miner and Bolt then got out of the vehicle, and with Patton, they began punching and kicking the two men, while taunting them for being gay.

One of the accusers was able to pull out a cellphone and call 9-1-1 and told the suspects that police were on their way. Patton, Bolt and Miner then got back into their vehicle and drove away, police said.

Police said the trio was accompanied by a fourth person — a woman — at the time of the incident. The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office continues to review the results of the investigation for possible charges against her, police said.

Police said that Miner and Bolt were arrested late Friday afternoon, Jan. 25. Patton was taken into custody the next morning, Jan. 26.

Bolt and Miner were each charged with:

• Two counts of aggravated battery in a public way, a Class 3 felony
• One count of mob action, a Class 4 felony
• Two counts of hate crime, a Class 4 felony
• Four counts of battery, a Class A misdemeanor

Patton is charged with:

• Two counts of aggravated battery in a public way, a Class 3 felony
• One count of mob action, a Class 4 felony
• Two counts of hate crime, a Class 4 felony
• Six counts of battery, a Class A misdemeanor

Police said Miner was transported to the Kane County Jail, and that Bolt was released after posting $3,000 cash bond. Patton also was released after posting $3,000 cash bond. The three are scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Feb. 15 in Room 217 of the Kane County Judicial Center.

On its website, the FBI has a civil rights page with an overview about hate crimes that states, “Congress has defined a hate crime as a ‘criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender's bias against a race, religion, disability, ethnic origin or sexual orientation.’ ”
