Wilson Street Traffic Project To Begin Sept. 24

The City of Batavia will begin work on the first of three projects to modernize and interconnect the traffic signals in the downtown on Monday, September 24.

The project begins with the Wilson Street intersections at Washington Avenue (IL Rte 25) and Wilson Street and River Street (IL Rte 25).

These intersections are being coordinated with the completion of the streetscape project on North River Street, which is scheduled to reopen to traffic on Oct. 19.

This project is the first of three traffic signal modernization and interconnect projects planned in the downtown area in the next few years.  For all of these projects the modernization portion of the project includes the complete replacement of the outdated traffic signal poles and equipment at the specified intersections.  The interconnect portion of the project includes synchronizing the traffic signals to improve traffic flow.  Once all three projects are completed all of the traffic signals in the downtown area will be synchronized to improve traffic circulation.  These projects are being funded primarily by the Illinois Department of Transportation, with non-participating items being funded by the City of Batavia.

The second phase of the three-phase project will include the intersection of Wilson Street/Batavia Avenue (IL Route 31) and Wilson Street/Island/Shumway Avenue will be constructed in 2013 with the Wilson Street Streetscape project.  This project will interconnect this intersection to all of the traffic signals along Wilson Street.

The third and final phase of the downtown interconnect and modernization project will include the intersection of Main Street/Batavia Avenue (IL Route 31) and construction is anticipated in 2015 in coordination with the Main Street Reconstruction project.  This project will complete the process to interconnect all of the traffic signals within the downtown area.

All three projects will be coordinated with the Illinois Department of Transportation. For more information on this project visit the City’s website at www.cityofbatavia.net.
